A child’s brain is continuously developing. Prevention
Although omega-3 fatty acids are essential, most North American children consume insufficient amounts of them. Fatty fish, which are the primary dietary source of DHA, are rarely consumed on a regular basis. Large nutrition surveys also show that the overall quality of children’s diets remains far from optimal, particularly when it comes to fish and several essential nutrients (Gu & Tucker, 2019; Bailey et al., 2012).
This reality is also reflected in studies measuring the omega-3 index in children. The levels observed are generally low but increase significantly when children consume more fatty fish or receive DHA and EPA supplementation (Al-Ghannami et al., 2018).
