- Clinical studies on devil’s claw extracts demonstrate significant efficacy (analgesic and anti-inflammatory) by inhibition of Cox-2 and iNOS via PGE2 and NF-kapaB (Georgiev et al., 2013, Gagnier et al., 2004). Gagnier and collaborators concluded moderate to strong evidence for concentrations of 40 mg or more of harpagoside per day when administered devil’s claw extract. The double standardization of harpagoside and harpagosides (family of compounds) assures a better activity by a stronger inhibition of the production of leukotrienes and thromboxanes than the harpogoside alone purified (Maique Weber Biavatti, 2009; Garnier et al., 2004). Devil’s Claw Extract
Originally from the Kalahari Desert in South Africa, devil’s claw has been used for centuries as an analgesic and to treat digestive problems, fever, diabetes and high blood pressure (Georgiev et al., 2013, Alternative Medicine Review, 2008). Its use is recognized by the European Pharmacopoeia for the treatment of rheumatism and arthritis. More than 60 years of study and the review of more than 15 human clinical studies have demonstrated its effectiveness (Georgiev et al., 2013; Gagnier et al., 2004). It produces an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect and has inhibitory effects on two cartilage degradation enzymes (metalloproteinase and elastase; Alternative Medicine Review, 2008).
