The first years of life are a critical period for the development of this complex ecosystem. Several factors, including mode of delivery, breastfeeding, diet, environment, and antibiotic use, can influence its composition. A diverse and balanced microbiota is one of the foundations of good digestive and immune health. The Limosilactobacillus fermentum CECT5716 (LC40®) strain used in BASE Kids was selected for its safety and its documented benefits in infants.
Prevention
An infant’s microbiota is still developing. During this period, several factors can disrupt its balance, including infections, dietary changes, and antibiotic treatments. Although often necessary, antibiotics can temporarily reduce microbiota diversity and may cause changes that persist for several months or even years, depending on the study (Langdon et al., 2016; Korpela et al., 2024).
Digestive issues are also common during early childhood. Approximately one in five infant’s experiences colic during the first months of life, and nearly one in four children will develop a functional gastrointestinal disorder during childhood (Robin et al., 2018; Scarpato et al., 2021). In this context, certain specific probiotic strains may offer an interesting approach to supporting the microbiota and promoting healthy digestive function.
BASE Kids
BASE Kids provides 1 billion CFU of Limosilactobacillus fermentum LC40® (CECT5716) per daily dose (5 drops). Originally isolated from breast milk, this strain is one of the best-studied probiotics in infants. Clinical studies suggest that it may help promote a healthy intestinal microbiota, support digestive function, and reduce the incidence of diarrhea in infants. Recent research also suggests potential benefits for infant colic and immune system support (Benis et al., 2023; Gil-Campos et al., 2012).
The formula comes in easy-to-administer liquid drops that can be given directly into the baby’s mouth or mixed with breast milk or infant formula. It requires only one daily dose and was developed according to the same quality standards as all BASE Kids products.
Use
BASE Kids Probiotic is designed to support the development of the intestinal microbiota from the first months of life. It can be used daily to help promote a healthy intestinal microbiota, particularly when the microbiota may be more vulnerable, such as during or following antibiotic treatment. In this situation, it is recommended to administer the probiotic at least two to three hours before or after the antibiotic.
The recommended dose is 5 drops once daily for infants from 0 to 12 months of age. The product can be administered directly into the baby’s mouth or mixed with breast milk or infant formula, making it easy to incorporate into the daily routine.
