Vitoli® SLEEP is recommended for those having difficulty falling asleep, suffering from sleep problems or undergoing schedule changes such as travel or work shifts. The benefits should be felt from the first night, with optimal results after two weeks. Sleep problems can manifest themselves in many ways and cause irritability, problems with concentration and memory, digestive disorders, blood pressure, a weakened immune system and/or depression (Cribbet et al., 2014; Campos Costa et al., 2013).
Sleep disorders increase systemic inflammation levels which may contribute to the negative effects of age-related inflammatory processes (Cribbet et al., 2014). Up to 80% of adults over 50 can have sleep problems (Campos Costa et al., 2013). Sleep plays such an important role in aging processes; people who sleep less than 5 hours a night have shorter telomeres (biological indicators of cell life) (Starkweather et al., 2014).
- Valerian extracts increase GABA production and reduce synaptic reuptake (similar to diazepam; Alramadhan et al., 2012). Some molecules also bind to other anti-anxiolytic receptors (Kennedy and Wightam, 2011; Gooneratne, 2008).
- People with significant sleep problems have an increased need for antioxidants (Tomic et al., 2010).
- The EMA (European Medicines Agency) reports that there is no known case of significant interaction with passionflower (over 30 years). A recent study (Kelber et al., 2014) also concludes that valerian has no known significant interaction and that its use is safe even for cancer patients.
Provitol®, Olive Extract (Olea europaea, fruit)
The health benefits of olive polyphenols are numerous (Ghanbari et al., 2012) and are related, in part, to the inhibition of the metabolic pathways of aging (Menendez et al., 2013). The formulation of the Provitol® Complex, (2 capsules) is equivalent to 100% of the required dose of hydroxytyrosol for the permitted health claim by EFSA in Europe.
Valerian Root Extract
Valerian has been used since the 16th century for the treatment of anxiety, headaches due to nervousness, treatment of insomnia and inflammation. It is one of the 9 plants with the highest pharmacological potential (Enna and Norton, 2012). It is recommended that standardized abstracts be used for efficiency and safety reasons (Gooneratne, 2008; Enna and Norton, 2012).
Passionflower Extract
Although several European countries have been using it for over 30 years, passionflower is native to North America. Passionflower extracts are traditionally used to relieve mild symptoms of nervous tension and to promote sleep in adults.
Melatonin
Melatonin is a natural molecule produced mainly by the pineal gland, but also in several other tissues. Melatonin is particularly known for regulating chronological rhythms (circadian rhythms), to improve sleep and relieve jet lag.
Non-Medicinal Ingredients
Magnesium stearate,
Microcrystalline cellulose.
A non-medicinal ingredient would be considered as any substance added to a natural health product to confer the desired consistency or form on the medicinal ingredients. It is therefore a filler, facilitating the capsulation process. They do not influence the health benefits of the product.
