  • Helps to support eye health in conditions such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
  • Provides antioxidants.

Vitoli®‘s VISION is recommended to maintain visual acuity with age. Macular degeneration and cataracts cause significant vision problems, mainly in people 65 years of age and older. Smoking significantly increases these risks and healthy eating can have a significant effect on the risk reduction (Abdel-Aal et al, 2013). Large-scale clinical studies (AREDS and AREDS2) have demonstrated the preventive effects of lutein and zinc (Hobbs and Bernstein, 2014).

With age, the risk of macular degeneration increases dramatically. The number of people affected by these vision problems increases from 1 in 7 people aged 55 to 65 to 1 in 3 people over 75 years of age. Studies have shown the importance of preventative supplements in the elderly. It should also be noted that in addition to these visual health functions, lutein reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. It also supports the preservation of cognitive abilities and the maintenance of telomeres (indicators of the useful life of cells) (Sen et al, 2014; Bovier et al, 2014).

  • Two large-scale American studies have confirmed the benefits of using supplements for the prevention of macular degeneration and cataracts: AREDS (3549 participants) and AREDS2 (4203 participants) (Age-related eye disease study).
  • Lutein is beneficial for cardiovascular health (Abdel-Aal et al, 2013) and it also blocks the activation of the transcription factor NF-Kappa B, which plays a role in a multitude of diseases and in inflammatory processes (Wang et al, 2014).
  • Hydroxytyrosol protects retinal pigments while improving the function of mitochondria in a macular degeneration preventative model (Liu et al, 2007).

Provitol®, Olive Extract (Olea europaea, fruit)

The antioxidant effects of hydroxytyrosol replace the use of vitamin C in this formula. Hydroxytyrosol may protect retinal pigments (Liu et al, 2007).  In addition, olive polyphenols may modulate the metabolic pathways of aging (Menendez et al, 2013). The formulation of Provitol® Complex represents 100% of the required hydroxytyrosol dose for the health claim permitted by EFSA in Europe.

Marigold Extract (Tagetes erecta, flower)

Lutein is extracted (with zeaxanthin) from a flower native to Mexico and Central America: marigold (also known as calendula). Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoid pigments that are also found in cantaloupe, pasta, corn, carrots, yellow and orange pepper, fish (salmon) and eggs. Recently, lutein concentration in the brain has also been linked to the preservation of cognitive abilities as one ages (Johnson, 2012).

Zinc and Copper

Zinc is also important for eye health as an essential constituent of many enzymes. It is necessary for the visual process and retinal metabolism. Zinc is also a component of the enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD): a natural antioxidant enzyme (Rasmussen and Johnson, 2013). Copper is added concomitantly with zinc since taking a zinc supplement may cause copper deficiency.

Non-Medicinal Ingredients

Magnesium stearate,
Microcrystalline cellulose.

A non-medicinal ingredient would be considered as any substance added to a natural health product to confer the desired consistency or form on the medicinal ingredients. It is therefore a filler, facilitating the capsulation process. They do not influence the health benefits of the product.
